Liam Gallagher's pop star wife Nicole Appleton was totally blindsided when the rocker called to tell her about allegations he fathered a love child with another woman, according to her mother.
The British musician is reportedly preparing to take legal action against editors of the New York Post after they ran a story suggesting the former Oasis star is locked in a battle with a US-based journalist over allegations he fathered her daughter.
Appleton's mother Mary told Britain's Sunday Mirror Gallagher called the former All Saints singer to warn her before the story emerged in the press.
"My daughter's whole world has suddenly collapsed ... It's a horrible mess," she says.
"The first we knew of this was when Liam called Nicky to tell her. It was the day before the first story ran.
It's so hard to come to terms with when there was no indication this could happen...
"I just don't know whether these accusations are true or not. Nicky can only think that they are. I just feel so sad. As a family, I feel like we've just lost 13 years and someone we love. Liam is actually nothing like the wild boy he appears to be on stage."
Mary said Appleton was on vacation with her sisters and the couple's son Gene, while Gallagher continues touring with his band Beady Eye, but he was planning to join her once he finishes his gigs.
"They were supposed to be on holiday together right now. Liam has his tickets and he's supposed to be meeting her this weekend. I don't know if he will now though. She's with her sisters and all their children at the moment."
