CEDRIC GRAY discovers a secluded homestead that meets a medley of requirements.

This is a property suited to the city executive, horse-lover, hobby farmer or water sport enthusiast. With about 6ha in excellent pasture and a waterfront boundary of more than 300m, it is undoubtedly a property suited to a wide
range of interests.

The homestead, in Riverland Rd, Huapai, is owned by Gavin and Jan Howlett who built the stylish brick-and-tile house seven years ago. They chose a beautifully sheltered spot at the end of a long driveway. Even the drive is impressive, with a neighbouring chestnut grove on one side and well-groomed, well-fenced paddocks on the other.

Best of all are the lovely waterfront views from the slightly elevated site. The upper reaches of Brighams Creek offer ever-changing views, with water skiing, yachting and kayaking holding centre stage during the summer. The sporting action gives way to foraging sea birds for the rest of the year.

The five paddocks provide excellent grazing for horses and a few head of cattle. They are well-drained and have ample year-round water. A small paddock near the house has an equestrian training arena, and there is a neat stable complex with stabling for a couple of horses.

The house has uninterrupted views across Brighams Creek towards Whenuapai and Hobsonville on the upper reaches of Waitemata Harbour. It is surrounded by easy-care lawns and gardens.

The interior features an impressive formal lounge with a raised fireplace, a large family living area and an immaculate kitchen on the ground floor. The sun-filled conservatory that opens to a salt-water swimming pool has become a favourite spot for family dining and entertaining.

There are four bedrooms, two of which are on the first level where the master bedroom enjoys an en suite, a walk-in dressing room, a private gallery and a small balcony. The upstairs bedroom has its own staircase and gallery, making it an ideal guest unit.

The generous office space on the ground floor could easily be converted into a fifth bedroom, and there is enclosed double garaging and ample parking.

A cosy self-contained unit, with three bedrooms and an open-plan living area, offers attractive rental or homestay accommodation. It enjoys privacy and excellent rural views.

The property, which is close to Huapai Golf Course, is for sale through Bayleys. Contact David Savery on 309 6020 for further details.
