Dna Wells has a love affair with slow racehorses. The former New Zealand eventing representative is often gifted young thoroughbreds that have failed on race days and or that show aptitude for jumping.
Dna manages a 7.8ha property in Peake Rd, Cambridge, where she educates her small equestrian
team.
The property is owned by Peter Tatham, of Auckland, a part-owner of Jezabeel, which galloped to fame in 1999 when it won the Auckland and Melbourne Cups. The beautifully manicured Monarch Farms, owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, of the renowned Cambridge Stud, is one of its immediate neighbours, and the Cambridge training centre is a short distance away.
"This is real horse country," says Dna. "Every property in Peake Rd seems to graze horses." Part of the Firth estate, which once comprised several hundred acres on the outskirts of town, and distinguished by its mature shelter trees, the property is divided into eight paddocks, all with post and rail fencing.
Dna has managed the property for the past two years, during which she has carried out a regular fertilising programme. Stocking the property with young cattle and a small flock of sheep has greatly improved the pasture, which is now ideal for horse adjistment and pre-training.
The facilities include a 60m by 28m dressage area, stockyards and a loading ramp. All are nearby a stable complex, complete with four boxes, outdoor yards, heavy vehicle garaging, machinery storage and a staff kitchen.
The Victorian-style house occupies a central position in the heart of the farming operation. It is at the end of a long driveway, which also provides access to the stables.
Built about 80 years ago, it was one of the first homesteads in the district. There are four large bedrooms off a central hallway, a farmhouse kitchen, a cosy family room, complete with coal range stove, and a large lounge. An extension to the lounge has been converted into an office.
Typical of older-style homes, it has a north-facing veranda, with easy access to the lounge and living areas. The house is surrounded with cropped hedges, spacious lawns and gardens.
