A zone change is being sought by the proponents of a residential and commercial development based at Wooing Tree Vineyard on the outskirts of Cromwell.
Vineyard partners Geoff and Jane Bews and Steve and Thea Farquharson said the vineyard would remain on the 26ha site and the new development, tobe known as Wooing Tree Estate, could include community amenities, tourist attractions, retail and accommodation.
They are seeking public feedback on the plans and expect to apply to the Central Otago District Council in the new year for a zone change.
The site is between SH6, SH8B and Shortcut Rd and the partners said the plans would ''grow'' the town in a way that would support its tourism, wine and residential interests.
''We want to support the growth of Cromwell by creating a desirable living and lifestyle space, featuring sections of various sizes and an exclusive business area, all the while retaining the feeling of a vineyard village,'' Mr Bews said.
''Our plans provide for far more attractive and suitable growth than the large lot rural residential sections currently allowed.''
Ten percent of the development was allocated to commerce while the remaining 90% was for grape vines, residential lots and open spaces. Site concepts had been drawn up.
The Wooing Tree, which the vineyard is named after, would take pride of place in a public green area, the developers said. The zoning change proposed would cater for a mix of low to high-density residential and light commercial.
A new roundabout would be part of the development, at the intersection of SH8B and Barry Ave, serving as the main entry and exit route to the estate. A second access point along Shortcut Rd was also part of the plans.
