A few entries have already been received for an elite speed shear competition, which is by invitation. The winner will take home $2500, while the runner-up will get $1250.
Intermediate blade shearers are also encouraged to sharpen their tools for the celebrations, a category that was taken out of the line-up about eight years ago, due to a lack of numbers.
However, the 50th anniversary was a perfect reason to bring it back for old times' sake.
And, if time allows, organisers want to add a clean shear category for intermediate and junior shearers, Mr White said.
A transtasman blade test will also see New Zealand and Australia go head-to-head on October 14.
The Waimate Shears will feature an overall prize draw of about $10,000.
Waimate Shears' main speed shear event will also take place on October 14, as part of the PGG Wrightson competition circuit.
