Revingtons Hotel in Greymouth had its roof ripped off as wild winds whips through the city centre. Video credit - Andy Thompson

Andy Thompson is used to stormy West Coast weather but today is something out of the ordinary.

Thompson spoke to The Country about a video he posted on Facebook depicting strong winds whipping around Greymouth.

Andy says the "a huge amount of wind" hit Greymouth around 11am this morning, closing the town centre and ripping the roof off Revingtons Hotel and apparently it's not over yet.

"The wind is expected to pick up which is a bit frightening, it's only running at about half intensity at the moment and it is expected to double as we go through the day."

Andy says Civil Defence Centres are being manned although there is no emergency yet.

Also in today's interview - Andy discusses why Westland Milk Products is stealing a march on Fonterra and with a former All Blacks captain leading the charge.
