MetService severe weather warning: February 16-20. Video / MetService

A new low-pressure system is forecast to swing past New Zealand and hit the Chatham Islands after the mainland saw a Valentine’s weekend of wild weather.

“One low heads out, another arrives from the tropics, but most of NZ dodges this one,” Niwa Weather has forecasted.

“A few fronts pass over NZ through this weekend before a big high brings settled weather next week.

“That means calmer, more settled weather is finally on the way.”

MetService forecaster Kate Lyons told the Herald the current low bringing wet weather across New Zealand would slowly move off to the southeast today.

“There is a low currently to the north of us moving southeast, which misses the mainland but does cross the Chatham Islands,” she said.

A heavy rain watch for the Chatham Islands is forecast to begin at 9pm tomorrow and last for 12 hours.

MetService forecasts periods of heavy rain, with the possibility that amounts may approach warning criteria.

Conditions are forecast to improve for New Zealand today, with occasional showers in the ranges to the northeast of the North Island.

“There is no impactful weather across the mainland today.”

However, a series of fronts is forecast to bring wet conditions for much of the South Island across the end of the week and into the weekend.

“We have a front moving up the west of the South Island on Thursday and another on Friday,” Lyons said.

“We have more ridgy conditions settling in for the central and northern parts of the South Island on Saturday, but for the far south, we have more fronts from the Southern Ocean.

“If you’re in the southern part of the country, it will be swinging between alright and periods of rain and showers.”

The northern and central parts of New Zealand will see dry weather with some showers.

Lyons said a high would gradually make its way down towards the country over the weekend.

“Generally, that will bring fine weather with some showers scattered about.”
