MetService morning weather update: February 24. Video / MetService

New Zealand’s final week of summer will see sunny weather, high temperatures and showers.

Niwa Weather says high pressure is set to dominate the country’s weather this week, keeping things “mostly settled” across the country.

“That said, a few fronts will still sweep up from the south, bringing the biggest impacts to the South Island.”

MetService forecaster Juliane Bergdolt told the Herald a front would bring some rain for the west coast and eastern parts of the South Island.

“It then moves north and weakens by the time it gets to midday, with only a few showers left in the South Island and one or two spots of rain for the lower North Island,” she said.

“The rain should weaken further by evening, with only a few showers in the eastern and lower western parts of the North Island.”

More rain is forecast for the bottom and western parts of the South Island tomorrow.

“Otherwise, the North Island and the east coast of the South Island will be mostly fine.”

Bergdolt said temperatures today would remain normal for this time of year.

According to MetService, Auckland would reach a high of 24C today, while Hamilton would reach 26C.

Kaitaia is forecast to reach 26C while Tauranga will hit 27C.

“However, temperatures would get a little warmer tomorrow. We’re looking at mid-20s for the eastern areas of the South Island,” Bergdolt said.

“It would be mid-20s for Invercargill and Gore.”

Bergdolt said North Island temperatures were forecast to be as expected for late summer weather.

Both Auckland and Kaitaia are forecast to reach a high of 26C tomorrow while Hamilton will hit 27C.

Temperatures are forecast to be colder on the eastern side of the North Island, with Tauranga forecast to reach a high of 24C, and Napier and Gisborne only forecast to reach 22C.
