Weaner bulls in demand but conditions bite

Buying power from Wairoa to Eketahuna attended the Dannevirke Weaner Bull sale on November 21 with prices holding up, although drier conditions in Hawkes Bay meant bidding was not as vigorous as the last sale.

Top price ($572) for Friesian bulls went to this Sinclair Bros. pen.

The quality of the 653 livestock on sale was up on the last sale, reflecting the recent fortnight of sun bringing the bulls on, according to auctioneer Bjorn Andersen.

These three pens of Friesian bulls reflect the range of prices $518 - $560.

Prices for Friesian Weaner Bulls ranged between $540 and $572 for the heavier stock and $450-$530 for lighter.

These white faced Friesian Hereford X bulls from Brian and Fiona Murdoch sold for the top price of $670.

There were just 100 Friesian X bulls but they ranged from $535 up to the top price of $670 with the majority $600+.

These Murray Grey X heifers from TSM Farms sold for $560.

Weaner heifers topped out at $575 for a pen from Joanne Smith, with the average price being $540 over 120 head.

The next sale on December 12 will feature many more beef cross bulls.

Pen One - autumn-born bulls from Gardners Road Farms - sold for $680.
