In a sale of 435 weaner bulls and heifers, a small crowd of bidders showed keen interest early, but prices dwindled as the sale progressed.

Top prices for Friesian weaner bulls stole the limelight at the PGG Wrightson's Dairy Beef Sale on Tuesday March 6. Top price of $770/head went to PA and EM Madsen but eight other pens sold over $700/hd.

There were 200 pure Friesian bulls and auctioneer Bjorn Andersen said he could have sold 200 more in strong demand. The average price was $635/hd.

Prices for Friesian X bulls were not as high as pure Friesians, top prices of $665/hd going to five Speckle Park bulls from Quigley Partnership. Prices ranged between $510/hd and $650/hd.

Ten steers from the Gregg Walshe Family Trust hit an isolated high of $700. A yarding of 150 weaner heifers gained little interest, with lots passed in. Top price was $635/hd but many lots failed to reach $500/hd.

Jock Cameron, representing J Griffith and Co in Wairarapa, bought more than 100 weaner bulls and said the company was very pleased with the prices paid.
