Drivers from Auckland to Invercargill (24 in total) took part navigating the rugged tracks, relying on their crew to winch them out of slushy holes.

As well as dealing with a difficult course, drivers were also penalisedfor knocking over flags or ignoring safety rules.
Engines died and winches were lost as drivers revved their 4WD vehicles around the muddy course.
