Wairarapa has some of the country's top ram studs.

Wairarapa has some of the country's top ram studs.

Beef + Lamb NZ Sheep Industry Awards are now in their fifth year and - drum roll please - we are hosting them for the first time in Wairarapa this July.

I'm excited for many reasons. Firstly, Wairarapa was ahead of its time when it comes to recognising the importance of commercial sheep genetics. Secondly, the region has some of the country's top ram studs. And, finally, it will be a fantastic host.

This annual flagship event was the brainchild of the B+L Southern South Island Farmers Council. They thought the sector should be celebrating its top performers.

As well as recognising ram breeders through the four genetic-based categories, the awards also champion the industry's innovators and leaders.

Supplier of the Year is always an interesting category. The meat processors put forward one top supplier each. The lineup of farmers is always impressive and their approaches to meeting market requirements highlight how well the supplier-processor-consumer chain can operate.

The Science Award recognises a scientist who has contributed to a more profitable and/or productive sheep industry, while Trainer of the Year celebrates a person involved in sector training.

The Innovation Award recognises a standout contribution to the sheep industry, by someone who has thought outside the square.

As the name suggests, the Significant Contribution to the New Zealand Sheep Industry Award highlights individuals who have been outstanding ambassadors.

They tell the sheep industry story and are committed to environmental sustainability.

Last year, the Emerging Talent Award was introduced. It's for an up-and-coming individual, who's focused on the future and inspires others.

The awards evening is on Wednesday, July 6, at Solway Park.
