A driving complaint has led to the seizure of 353 mostly undersized paua and the arrest of two men in Central Hawke’s Bay.
Police uncovered the illegal haul after being called to Farm Rd, near Blackhead, last Tuesday.
Senior Constable John Singer of Central Hawke’s Bay Police said officers locatedthe vehicle and began a search of the vehicle after speaking to its two occupants, who were known to police.
“Upon searching the vehicle 353 paua, a large majority of which were undersized, were located in two sacks in the boot of the car.
“Police contacted Fisheries New Zealand officers and a joint investigation was carried out. The two occupants are likely to face prosecution under the Fisheries Act.
“This is a good reminder for those thinking about fishing this summer, do it responsibly, do not take undersized fish or shellfish, and do not overfish. You can expect to see officers anywhere anytime and we do not take kindly to people knowingly damaging our environment,” says Singer.
Fisheries New Zealand district manager of fisheries compliance, Mike Sutton said, “This was a lot of paua, and it’s disappointing to find people blatantly breaking the rules.
“The rules are there for a reason - to protect the sustainability of our shared fisheries.”
