MIA chief executive David Crawford told the Herald an international recall of a certain model doesn't necessarily apply here.
"That is because we do not get all models into this market and even when we do, sometimes there are differences for vehicles made for the New Zealand market compared to overseas markets," Crawford said.
He said automakers will contact local car owners if any vehicles are affected.
"If the recall also affects New Zealand vehicles, distributors will announce a recall for any affected vehicles and current owners will receive a written notification in the mail providing advice on the recall and actions owners should undertake to have the recall undertaken."
In its global recall announced Saturday, Hyundai said some of Santa Fe vehicles are at risk for the steering wheel breaking away from the steering column. Roughly 43,900 vehicles are included in Hyundai's recall.
Toyota recalled roughly 64,900 Tundras and Sequoias, saying these vehicles are at risk for having their electronic stability control systems shutting down unexpectedly.
Both carmakers will notify impacted owners of the recalled vehicles starting in March, and if necessary, will repair the vehicles at no cost.
