Teenage hunters, 15, missing in Raukūmara Forest Park, East Coast found

Two teenage hunters who went missing in Raukūmara Forest Park on the East Coast have been found.

A Ruatoria resident told the Herald the 15-year-old Bay of Plenty boys were found on Opiti Rd and were well.

“They were unprepared for an overnight stay, especially two wet ones.”

Inspector Phillip Gillbanks confirmed the hunters had been found.

After an extensive search this morning, the two teenagers were located just after midday by a LandSAR search team.

The pair were winched from the bush by an NZDF helicopter and were being assessed by medical staff and appeared to be uninjured.

“We would like to remind people to always prepare for any eventuality when venturing into the outdoors,” Gillbanks said.

“NZ conditions and terrain can be unforgiving, and it pays to always have the necessary clothing and equipment to spend a night in the bush regardless of your intentions.”

The pair were reported missing yesterday morning after they failed to return from a hunting trip.

Police said the pair went into the bush near the Otipi trig and were expected to follow the creek.
