Police are urging Taieri farmers to secure their bowsers after another theft from a fuel tank in the area.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said someone entered a rental car yard at Dunedin Airport before stealing 160 litres of petrol and 31 litres of diesel overnight on Friday.

Police inquiries are continuing.

The latest incident follows a series of thefts from bowsers (tankers) on farms in the Taieri last year.

Dinnissen urged farmers to ensure their tanks were secured and their security lights switched on, as shorter days could present more opportunity for thieves.

"We're putting a message out there to .... the cockies that their tanks are secured and their security lights are on, with the nights starting to creep in."
