The summer racing period is somewhat of a holiday tradition for Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson.

The 63-year-old has been bringing his family to Cromwell to camp for 30 years and it has served as ample opportunity to unleash his horses during a busy racing season.

Williamson, who has been training for almost as long, said the summery atmosphere of the Cromwell trots had always served as an attraction.

"We love racing here," he said.

"It's normally great weather and we've had fair bit of success over here.

"We enjoy calling it our holiday."

The North Otago veteran has built an impressive career of trotting triumphs. His win two years ago in Cromwell with Astral Ruler was his 500th as a trotting trainer. No other trainer has been this successful.

Other highlights include the Dominion Handicap with Springbank Richard in 2009, the group 2 New Zealand Trotting Championship in 1996, two Rowe Cups in 2007 and 2009 with One Over Kenny, three Harness Jewels wins and the Australian Derby and Australian Trotters' Grand Prix titles.

Three of his four children have also followed in his footsteps. Sons Nathan, Matthew and Brad have also branched out on their own in the racing game as trainers and drivers.

Daughter Jasmyn has gone on to be an accountant.

Despite Williamson's prolific accomplishments, he said the monetary incentive was insignificant, compared with following your passion.

"They say if you enjoy what you're doing you never work a day in your life."

"It rings true for racing people."

The passion of the racing community could not be faulted yesterday at the Cromwell Trots.

Heavy rain ensured only the most dedicated of followers were there.

Wyndham HRC Promotions Officer Lindsay Beer said the weather was a major factor.

"[The rain] certainly affected attendance.

"People are pretty understanding and realise you can't do a thing about the weather. They've still got into the spirit of things."
