Stortford Lodge: Smaller weaners bring in the money

Autumn Weaner Steer Sale at Stortford Lodge.

A big yarding of more than 2000 top-quality weaner steers and bulls met the laws of supply and demand at this week's fair at Stortford Lodge.

Although nothing was passed in, prices were $100 or more, less than last month's fair and last year's fair. However, the smaller weaners continued to bring good money.
Agents said there were plenty of weaners available at present and this had reduced prices for the full rostrum of buyers.

Firm sales for weaner, heifer fair

A good, solid sale up to expectations was the verdict of agents of yesterday's second weaner heifer fair of the year at Stortford Lodge.

The steer fair on Tuesday saw prices drop on last year and last month but heifers held firm on both sales.

Again the quality of the offering of about 1000 head was outstanding, a reflection of a good growing season.

In the sheep pens an offering of about 5000 store lambs sold on a very strong market. Again most of the lambs were of top quality and sold accordingly.

Buyers were from Hawke's Bay, King country, Auckland, Waikato and Carterton.

Prime sale

Prime lambs turned up in good numbers at Monday's sale and sold on a sound market. There were 490 head on offer.

The lighter ewes in the offering of about 200 head sold well and one small pen of heavy ewes made $194.

The cattle offering of 15 head was mostly cull dairy cows which also sold well.
