Lambs sold well at the latest Stortford Lodge Sale

Lambs sold well at the latest Stortford Lodge Sale

The price of smaller store lambs went off the boil this week but good lambs and cattle remained strong at Stortford Lodge yesterday.

Some of a big yarding of about 6000 spring lambs showed the benefits of a good season but were younger than the last few weeks and sold accordingly.

Many farmers are also looking for rain before they buy more stock.

Another big yarding of more than 900 cattle sold to strong demand. A feature was the number of yearling bulls on offer. These included 92 heavy hereford bulls from Waipoapoa Station, Maraetotara. They weighed from 393kg to 492kg.

There was plenty of outside buyer support for the yardings. As well as Hawke's Bay, buyers were from Waikato, Manawatu, Taihape, Ohakune, Taranaki and Wairarapa.

Prime sale

A big yarding of prime ewes maintained the strong tone of recent weeks at Monday's prime sale

More than 5000 ewes of mostly good quality were on offer as lambs are weaned.

A smaller yarding of lambs of varying quality also sold well. Old-season lambs are still appearing and a lack of sustained sunshine in Hawke's Bay means new-season lambs are slower to finish.

Heavy cows made up most of the cattle offering of 63 head. A feature of the yarding was the weight of most of them, reflecting a good growing season in Hawke's Bay.
