Lambs sold well at Stortford Lodge.

Lambs sold well at Stortford Lodge.

A small offering of store lambs sold on a strong market at yesterday's Stortford Lodge sale.

The yarding of about 500 cattle also sold on a solid market. Rising two-year heifers were in particular demand. A feature of the sale was the 113 angus and angus-hereford heifers from Puketio Farm, Te Aute.

Buyers were from Hawke's Bay, Feilding and Tolaga Bay.

Weaner Heifer Fair

About 1000 weaner heifers sold on a par with last year at this week's all-breeds fair at Stortford Lodge.

Most of the offering reflected a very good season and those lines sold well. This year the Rangiora Farming Trust, Tutira, sold 283kg simmental-cross cattle for $3.72/kg, $1055/head, compared with 279kg cattle making $361/kg, $1010/head, last year.

However, the feature of this year's fair was 54 capital stock south devon heifers from Okaharau Station, Elsthorpe. The farm has been sold and the stud dispersed. The top line of 24 heifers at 273kg, made $1200/head or $4.38kg. The second line of 30 head weighing 230kg made $4.60/kg, or $1060/head.

Agents said a lack of buyer interest, despite the availability of good feed, was behind the sale, which they described as solid compared with the weaner steer fairs last week.
As well as Hawke's Bay, buyers were from Waikato, Wairarapa and Rotorua.
There are two more weaner fairs next month.
