Heifers and bulls made for good prices.

Heifers and bulls made for good prices.

A cattle yarding largely comprising 18-month heifers and bulls sold well at yesterday's Stortford Lodge store sale.

A feature of the sale was the 82 homebred angus bulls from The Hindmarsh Farming Co, Crownthorpe. They made between $2.96/kg and $3.14/kg.

A small yarding of store lambs of varying quality also sold well.

The offering of about 330 cattle and 1650 lambs sold to buyers from Hawke's Bay with two from Gisborne.

The cattle sale opened with a minute's silence to the late John Emmerson who died last week.

Mr Emmerson, a transport operator, was a strong supporter of the cattle sale, both buying and selling stock there.

Prime sale

Ewes held their value but lamb prices reflected the quality of the offering at Monday's prime sale.

There were no cattle on offer for the third time this year. Agents put that down to an abundance of cattle feed and the small margin between prime and store prices, meaning farmers hold their cattle to put more weight on and clean up the grass.

There were 330 lambs and about 1000 ewes on offer.

PRICES

Ewes: Shorn, good, $158; med, $121.50 to $138.50; lighter, $44 to $64; m/s $124.50. Slipe, good, $142 to $152; med, $127 to $140; lighter, $100 to $121.50.
Lambs: Male, $112 to $153.50; b/f, $116 to $132. Ewe, $75 to $132. M/s, $114 to $153; b/f, $118.50 to $144.
