Good two-year Angus steers were making up to $3.41/kg

Good two-year Angus steers were making up to $3.41/kg

A big store cattle sale of more than 1600 head saw strong demand for a quality yarding at Stortford Lodge yesterday.

Two-year steers and bulls and yearling stock made up most of the yarding and they all sold well.

However, due to deadline constraints prices for most of the yearling stock were not available.

Good two-year 450kg angus steers made up to $3.41/kg while two-year-old bulls made up to $3.30/kg.

A feature of the bull sale was the 163 well-grown two-year-olds of various breeds sold by Ray Thompson, Nuhaka.

A small sheep sale was made up mostly of ewes with lambs at foot from Tauwharetoi Station, Wairoa. They were in good demand.

A small pen of spring ram lambs made $130.50.

There was plenty of outside support with buyers from Wairarapa, Rangitikei, Manawatu, Taranaki and Gisborne as well as Hawke's Bay.

PRIME SALE

A big yarding of prime lambs eased in price for all but the top pens at Monday's sale.
However, ewe prices dropped by up to $30 as processing space tightened because of the need to deal with lambs needing to go through before they cut their adult teeth.
Agents said some works were also working restricted shifts because of a shortage of labour.

A feature of the lamb sale of almost 4000 head was the first appearance of spring lambs.
The best of them, a pen of 16 well-grown, weaned mixed-sex lambs from Phil King's dorset stud at Tikokino, made $192. A pen of 238 old-season male lambs made the top price of $220.

The rest of the yarding was back by perhaps $5.

The cattle yarding of 46 head, mostly female stock, sold to expectations.
