An ex-Kapiti local is knee deep in a winter wonderland because of this morning's frosty weather.

Nikita Patterson, who is now living in Apiti, a small town 35 minutes north of Fielding, sent Kapiti News photos of the rising snow gathered on and around her rural property.

"It's snowed here before, but not like this," the mother of one said.

"I noticed it at 6am and it was around 50cm, and now its knee deep and still snowing."

The town's Apiti Tavern and Eatery is acting as a civil defence spot in case weather conditions escalate.

"There's been no power here since 6am and no one can get in or out unless they've got a 4x4 and chains."

The previous Paraparaumu resident said while her farm animals are not too happy with the conditions, her husky, Hunter, was feeling at home.

"The excitement has definitely taken over, especially for my son Bentley. He's mesmerised.
