He likes beer, farming and is pretty happy with his Speight's prizes package.

Sound like the typical southern man?

Well, for Balfour sheep and beef farmer Joseph Moir, he lived up to the stereotype and at the same time claimed the title of the Southern Field Days Southern Man in Waimumu recently.

The 29-year-old battled seven other men from throughout Southland and Otago, completing challenges that involved pushing a lawn mower, press-ups, burpies, beer tasting and lifting salt blocks.

Unsurprisingly, it was the beer tasting that was Mr Moir's favourite. Ond on the other hand, he did not enjoy lifting a tonne of salt blocks, he said.

''I won the first challenge, where we had to build a planter box, and the Speight's testing and was second in a few of the other ones.''

As for the most surprising challenge ...

''I certainly didn't expect the rapping challenge,'' he said.

Competitors had to create their own rap to perform, which for a bunch of country boys, was quite an experience.

Mr Moir was surprised to win the competition, but had enjoyed the experience, which he had been somewhat roped in to doing, he said.

''It was fun, I'd do it again.''
