A small Southland town has been completely cut off after this weekend's wild weather.

Heavy rain has caused all roads in and out of Waikaia to be flooded, leading to closures and warnings for motorists.

Remarkable images captured by Mike Thom of High Country Helicopters show the extent of the flooding.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said that State Highway 90 between Tapanui and Waikoikoi is closed, and flood warnings are in place for SH6 Queenstown-Kingston and SH8 Alexandra-Milton.
