Sheepdog trials: Father and daughter unbeatable at Waitahuna trials

It was a Tweed in the lead in all four events at the Waitahuna dog trials.

In a remarkable achievement, local farmer Roger Tweed won the long head, short head and yard and straight hunt with Rose, Skud and Cooper respectively, while daughter Steph won the zig zag hunt with Lou.

Mr Tweed was also second in the long head, third in the short head and yard and second and fourth in the zig zag hunt, while Miss Tweed was fourth in the straight hunt.

To top it off, Skud, a maiden dog, scored 99 points out of a possible 100 in the yarding event.

Miss Tweed (26) joked that she "stuffed it up" for her father. If she had not won the zig zag hunt, then he would have claimed the quartet.

"If I hadn't done that, he would have won all four. That hasn't been done many times at all," she said.

Mr Tweed has been dog trialling for more than 35 years while his daughter started when she was still at school.

Now a stock manager on a property near Waipara, in North Canterbury, Miss Tweed said there was no family rivalry. Both were pleased when the other did well, and the father-daughter success at Waitahuna was "pretty cool".

She had not been to the home trials for a few years and she always enjoyed getting down there, staying on for Easter.

Her dog Lou was by one of her own dogs who was a son of Gemma, Mr Tweed's champion trial dog.

Miss Tweed has four dogs qualified for the New Zealand championships which are being held at Omaka, Marlborough, next month, while Mr Tweed has five.
