Rally driver Mike McLean is putting in the hard yards with a Central Hawkes Bay shearing gang to finance his motorsport ambitions. He caught up with Dom George from The Country Early Edition to chat about both careers.

The 21-year-old former squash pro has just graduated from the 2016 Elite Motorsport Academy and is currently being mentored by WRC winner Hayden Paddon.

Mike grew up around agriculture as his father, also a rally driver, owns top dressing company McLean Ground Spread.

So what's next for Mike McLean? Next year he hopes to contest the New Zealand Rally Championship and follow in the footsteps of former Academy graduates Paddon and Emma Gilmour.
