Torrential rain overnight and plenty more in the forecast has forced the postponement today of the cross country phase of the eventing at the Horse of the Year Show in Hastings.

A decision on whether it will run tomorrow (Sunday) will made later in the day by event organisers.

Competition in the Land Rover Premier Arena has also been affected, with nothing being run until after midday.

There is extensive flooding around the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds where around 3000 people are staying on site in tents and trucks.

The six-day show is considered the most prestigious equestrian event in New Zealand and has attracted around 1350 riders and nearly 1800 horses, who are all vying for the 'of the year' crowns across the disciplines.

Last night saw a full house for the Hastings, Heart of Hawke's Bay Friday Night Extravaganza, with around 60,000 people expected at the show over the week.
