Rain and outside buyers meant a strong sale for cattle and lambs at Stortford Lodge store sale yesterday. Buyers for the approximately 470 head of cattle and four thousand lambs came from Hawke's Bay, Manawatu, Gisborne, Wairarapa and Waikato. Most pens of R2 steers made more than $3/kg and R1 friesian bulls cracked $3.60/kg mark. Much of the yarding was R2 heifers which also sold well. Scanned-in-lamb ewes were down on last week, reflecting the quality of the yarding. Agents said good rain last week would get crops and young grass growing to finish stock.

Prime sale

Prime lamb prices were strong but prices for other classes of stock reflected the quality of the offering at Monday's prime sale. The yarding of 31 head of cattle was mostly dairy or dairy-cross cows while there were a lot of dry light two-tooth ewes in the sheep yarding.
