The horticulture industry believes New Zealand is well-prepared for fruit flies, but not as ready for other threats and diseases.

An Auditor-General's report this week sounded dire warnings about New Zealand's preparedness for biosecurity incursions.

It raised particular concerns about the danger from foot and mouth disease.

Horticulture New Zealand's Peter Silcock says when it comes to his industry, there are well-developed plans to tackle fruit flies.

But he says there are a huge range of pests we still need to do a lot to prepare for.

Mr Silcock says better planning and preparedness are critical.

He says there are questions about the resources the Ministry for Primary Industries has.
