It is not long ago when we were congratulating ourselves on the kind, early winter weather. How quickly that changed. The present weather is a shocker, daily rain, freezing wind, no grass growth and mud everywhere. If this continues for long there will be a lot of farmers unloading cattle.

Dargaville Sale:

The sale went well for the 192 feeder calves only. Good calves made $260 to $365, then $200 to $240. Light calves made $145 to $180 down to $50 to $115.

Wellsford Sale:

Considering the weather conditions the market remained quite strong for the small sale on Monday 10th. Yearling bulls sold particularly well. 20 month steers fetched$1320 to $1375 (2.93c-3.05c) and the rest $1020 to $1225 (2.81c-3.09c). Light steers made $690 to $800 (3.06c-3.97c) 20 month bulls made $735 to $800 (3.20c-3.54c). 18 month heifers sold for $1025 to $1285 (2.62c-2.90c). Weaner heifers sold for $329 to $400 then $635 to $700 (3.24c-4.00c). 20 month bulls made $1190 to $1280 (2.70c) then $930 to $1330 (2.45c-4.40c).

Tuesday:

All the prime cattle sold very well in a small entry on Tuesday 11th with top steers making over $3.00kg. Prime ox made $2261 to $2430 then $1757 to $1764. down to $1502 to $1592 (2.89c-2.92c). Medium steers sold for $1001 to $1296 (2.60c-2.92c) prime heifers made $1138 to $1332 (2.09c-2.81c). Heavy cull cows $1209 to $1276 (2.24c) then $1017 to $1097 (2.03c-2.26c. Good medium cows made $846 to $961 (1.92c-2.33c).

Sheep:

The strong sheep market saw prime lambs sell for $119 to $127, then $107 to $119 down to $110. Store lambs fetched $101 to $110 then $66 to $90.

Feeder Calves:

Good feeder calves sold for $220 to $270 then $170 to $200 down to $120 to $155

Kauri Sale:

Kauri on Tuesday 11th was much the same as previous weeks. The small entry of store cattle sold reasonably well as did the feeder calves. 1 year Angus cross sold for $810 and 15 month steers $770.

Weaner steers sold for $550 and 1 year Jersey steers made $330. Jersey cross sold for $330. Angus cross weaner heifers sold for $710, and crossbred heifers $515. Good feeder calves made $185 to $310, then lots for $210 to $290. Light calves $150 to $190 down to $40 to $80.

Kaikohe Sale:

With 650 cattle at Kaikohe on Wednesday 12th the market was a little over supplied because of the weather and 200 2 year steers. Young cattle and cows were okay but grown cattle were a bit softer.

Heavy steers made $1380 to $1460 (2.81c-2.85c) then $1000 to $1200 and Friesian White face, Santa Gertrudis, Limousin $1000 to $1140 (3.00c-3.20c). Heavy bulls fetched $2350 (2.70c) then $$1030 to $1460 (2.90c-2.95c), 20 month beef cross and Hereford bulls made $960 to $1070 (3.00c-3.20c).

Autumn weaner bulls sold for $580 to $650 for Friesians, Whiteface and Friesian Angus. 1 year steers sold for $740 to $800 (2.66c-3.19c) down to $515 with small ones $390 to $455 (2.21c-3.67c).

Autumn weaner heifers Angus/Friesians, White face and Friesians made $390 to $420. Weaner heifers made $700 to $785 (3.00c-3.10c) then $580 to $650 (3.01c-3.37c) down to $410 to $455 (1.97c-3.27c).

2 year heifers sold for $1185 to $1680 (2.90c-2.93c) and 1 year heifers $620 to $650 (3.37-3.49c). Heavy Friesian cows made $1035 to $1200 (1.94c). Light Friesian cross and Ayrshire cows sold for $825 (1.81c) down to $630 to $690 (1.80c-1.90c).
