Northland Stock Report

The recent deluge helps to remind us that winter is still hovering in the background.

A lot of heavy country is wetter now than at any part of winter with this week's rainfall figures quoted from 15ml-20ml to 80ml nearer Auckland with some minor flooding.

Sale cattle numbers are still quite firm for the week and still not showing any easing in values although slaughter prices are trending down steadily.

• Dargaville Sale:
Dargaville had a good entry of 212 store cattle and 261 feeder calves on Thursday September, 15; the market remains firm.

2-year steers sold for $12 to $1530 and 18-month steers made $1195.

15-month steers sold to $1000 then $700 to $880.

15-month bulls made $820. Weaner bulls sold for $602 to $608, down to $480 to $500.

Top weaner steers made $900 and light steers made $450 to $492 down to $300.

Good 2-year heifers made $1050 to $1160, then $940 to $950 down to $840 to $875.

15-month heifers sold for $820, then $752 down to $515 to $605.

Weaner heifers sold for $710, down to $450 to $465.

Good feeder calves sold for $300 to $308, then $250 to $295, medium calves $180 to $235, light calves made $120 to $170 then $40 to $90.

• Matakohe Sale:
Held on Friday, September 16, with a good entry of 300 cattle, the sale was quoted as very strong like the rest.

Good 2-year whiteface and devon cross steers sold for $1260 to $1450.

Good 1-year friesian bulls sold for $900 to $1060.

1-year whiteface steers made $850 to $1010.

Autumn born friesian bull calves made $500 and $580.

Good 2-year heifers made $1150 to $1250.

Whiteface cows and calves sold for $1200.

1-year whiteface heifers made $798 to $815 and weaner heifer calves made $400 to $520.

• Maungakaramea Sale:
Held on Saturday, September 17, the sale went very well in spite of the deluge, that nearly drowned everyone but the sale went just the same as usual.

2-year whiteface steers made $1200 and angus steers $990.

1-year angus cross and whiteface steers made $700 to $860 and friesian steers $800.

Autumn-born, cross-bred steers made $1075 and weaner friesian bull calves made $420 to $520.
Cows and calves fetched $545 all counted and empty cows $800.

2-year angus heifers made $825.

1-year whiteface, angus and cross bred heifers sold for $690 to $765.

Autumn-born weaner heifers fetched $505 to $540.

• Sheep:
Good lambs made $94 and hoggets $80, mixed-age ewes $60 and ewes and lambs sold for $61 all counted.

• Pigs:
Good weaners sold from $80 to $85 and sows RW boar $100 to $150

• Wellsford Sale:
The offering was very light at Wellsford on Monday, September 19; values eased a little due to export schedules dropping and a shortage of grass.

Good prime ox made $1580 to $1680 (2.86c-2.93c), then $1100 to $1490 (2.59c-2.84c).

Prime heifers sold for $1530 (2.82c) then $1040 to $1250 (2.60c-2.82c).

18-month steers made $730 to $875 (4.09c-5.19c) and weaner steers $365 to $575 (3.15c-3.59c).

2-year bulls made $1170 (2.82c) and 1-year bulls $625 to $720 (2.68c-2.82c).

18-month heifers fetched $760 to $905 (2.91c-3.47c), then $450 to $645 (2.58c-3.82c).

• Tuesday:
The entry of prime cattle sold extra well for a small entry and the sheep were quoted as selling exceptionally well.

Prime heifers sold for $1438 to $1517 (2.76c-2.78c), then $1164 to $1367 (2.74c).

Heavy prime cows made $1579 (2.59c) and light cows $504 to $831 (1.53c-1.98c).

• Sheep:
Heavy prime lambs sold for $125 to $133, then $100 to $118, mediums $92 to $99.

Ewes and lambs made $40 to $55 all counted.

Mixed age ewes made $60 to $69, then $58.

Good store lambs made $89 to $91, then $70 to $75, down to $41.

• Feeder Calves:
The feeder calf market eased significantly on the day, the top calves fetched $220 to $305, then $185 to $200, down to $150 to $180, medium calves made $95 to $145 down to $20 to $85.

• Kauri Sale:
Kauri had a very good entry of over 300 store cattle and 335 calves on Tuesday, September 20.

A lot of the cattle were whiteface.

Experts thought the cattle eased a little but if they did it was more on the light cattle and not so much on the very good pens of 2-year whiteface cattle.

30-month steers - whiteface and charolais steers made $1310 and whiteface steers $1250 to $1315.

2-year whiteface steers made $1140, then charolais steers $1160 and murray grey/friesians $1122, 20-month steers sold for $1035 to $1060 for whiteface down to $845.

1-year whiteface steers made $960, then $830 to $895 and light steers $670 to $740.

Hereford-cross steers made $800 and light steers $665 to $710.

Shorthorn cross weaner steers made $605, angus-cross autumn born steer calves made $470 and weaner friesian-cross bulls $550.

Good angus friesian 2-year heifers made $930 to $1060.

18-month Charolais heifers made $860 and Devon heifers $805, Gelbvieh heifers made $730.

Whiteface heifers fetched $830.

A line of 25 autumn whiteface heifers made $898. Murray Grey/friesian heifers sold for $720 to $755. 1-year whiteface heifers made $655 to $735.

Shorthorn-cross weaner heifers made $590 to $610, Murray Greys made $660 and whiteface $635 to $705.

Feeder calf values are a bit mixed but mostly still going okay. A pen of early-born calves made $340, other good lots made $200 to $240, then $160 to $195 down to $115 to $150, and light calves $40 to $95.

• Kaikohe Sale:
Kaikohe was light on Wednesday with 445 mixed cattle.

The market remains firm; heavy 2-year steers sold for $1660 (2.79c), then $1240 to $1430 (2.86c-3.10c) and friesian steers $990 to $1100 (2.71c-2.95c) 18-month steers made $1005 (2.95c) then $775 to $840 (2.96c-3.18c).

Heavy bulls sold for $2180 (3.04c).

Good 1-year steers sold for $920 to $980 (2.93c-3.01c) and light steers $520 to $660; friesian-cross weaner steers made $465 (1.62c) 18-month bulls fetched $740 to $900 (2.74c-2.99c), 1-year mixed bull sold for $685 to $820 (2.88c-4.10c), then weaner bulls $225 to $350.

2-year charolais heifers made $1070 to $1310 (2.74c-3.82c).

Other heavy heifers made $1005 to $1435 (2.27c-2.69c) then $860 to $955 (2.23c-2.69c).

1-year simmental made $760 (2.88c) weaner heifers sold for $340 to $465 and weaner bulls $418 to $595, the advertised cows and calves sold for $1465 to $1590.

Heavy empty cows sold for $1050 to $1225 (2.14c-2.19c) then $875 to $915 (1.82c-1.99c) down to $645 to $690 (1.74c).

• Annual Bull Sales:
Kevin Flower Hereford Bull Sale:
Held at the Dargaville bull sale; a total clearance with the 30 2-year bulls averaged $3003 and the 24 yearling bulls averaged $2175 over all for a very good result.
