Three fine drying days and then back into the mud again. Farm land was just starting to recover somewhat - but now it's back to square one. It has not made any difference to cattle prices.

Numbers are very light except for Wellsford and Kaikohe. There is still a big demand for cattle that are in short supply. Feeder calf numbers are increasing as the first of the spring calves come forward.

Dargaville Sale:

Dargaville had a medium entry of 97 feeder calves and forty four cattle. Values remain very steady. 18-month steers made $885 to $930, to $905. Weaner bulls fetched $520 to $680 and weaner steers $400 to $550.

18-month heifers made $700. Weaner heifers made $550 down to $400 to $500. Good feeder calves sold for $280 to $301, then $200 to $275. Medium calves made $150 to $180 and light calves $110 to $150.

Maungakaramea Sale:

Maungakaramea had a good little sale on Saturday 15th with 18-month Charolais steers selling for $845 to $850. 2-year Short horn bulls made $1320. 1-year Friesian bulls made $550 to $800. 1-year small Angus steers made $200 to $400.

18-month Angus heifers sold for $900. 15-month Whiteface heifers sold for $700 to $770. Jersey in-calf dairy heifers recorded made $675. Autumn born Whiteface heifers fetched $510.

Sheep: Ewe hoggets sold for $72. Black face lambs sold for $70 to $90.

Pigs: Porkers made $150; very small weaner pigs made $28 and good mediums $70.
Wellsford Sale:

Steers eased a little at Wellsford on Monday 17th but the heifers sold well. Good 20-month steers made $1200 to $1315 (2.87c-2.81c) then $1178 to $1190 (2.74c-2.93c) and $1045 to $1090 (2.57c-2.90c). Good 1-year steers made $900 to $905 (7.70c-9.00c) then $600 to $770 (3.05c-3.42c) down to $545 to $595 (3.05c to 3.86c).
Weaner bulls sold for $510 to $710 (2.83c-5.08c). Heavy prime 2-year heifers sold for $1605 (2.96c) then $1100 to $1120 (2.78c-2.95c) down to $1045 to $1090 (2.79c-2.90c). Good 1-year heifers made $795 to $975 (3.23c-4.02c) then $575 to $640 (3.03c-3.32c).

Tuesday:

Prime cattle sold well and so did in-calf cows. Prime ox fetched $2180 to $2420 then $1657 to $1849 (2.81c-2.93c) down to $1099 to $1506 (2.65c-2.79c). Prime in-calf cows made $1008 to $1004 (1.92c-1.97c), then $1225 to $1332 (2.02c-2.38c) $1433 to $1538 (2.41c-2.43c) then $730 to $827 (1.90c-1.97c).

Sheep: Prime lambs made $120 to $135 then $110 to $120 extra heavy prime lambs made $135. Top store lambs made $111 to $113 then $100 to $105 down to $73 to $96 and $63 to $70. Prime hoggets made $101 to $150. Good mixed age ewes made $102 to $110, then $65 to $98.

Feeder Calves: Feeder calf numbers have started to increase with top calves selling well for $245 to $420, then a lot for $160 to $190 down to $100 to $105.

Kauri Sale:

Kauri had an increasing number of feeder calves on Tuesday 18th with 353 calves sold.

The market was quite firm. Good calves sold for $260 to $280, then $200 to $250, with mediums $150 to $180 down to $100 to $140 and small calves $10 to $100.

Kaikohe on Wednesday 19th was much the same as previous weeks a partial report saw a light yarding and firm market. 2-year steers made $1320 (2.80c-3.02c) down to $1075 to $1000 (2.80c-2.85c). 1-year steers made $600 to $780 (1.77c-3.97c).

Heavy bulls sold for $1690 (2.77c). 18-month bulls made $710 to $830 (2.55c-3.56c) and 1-year bulls $500 to $555 (2.63c-3.93c) to $405 (4.00c). Cows and calves made $710 to $1050 (4.15c-5.56c).

Heavy heifers fetched $1240 (2.77c) then $920 to $1000 (2.23c-2.70c) down to $750 to $795 (2.10c-2.70c). Heavy cows made $1000 to $1205 (1.99c-2.06c) then $875 to $930 (1.90c-2.00c) medium cows made $722 to $805 (1.67c-1.84c).
