Cattle numbers at the latest sales were very light except feeder calves

Just the same as last week with two or three fine days and then back to the rain and mud. The grass is trying to grow a little but there is plenty of rain to come yet before early spring. Once again cattle numbers are very light except feeder calves and values are mostly holding very well.

Peria Sale:

Peria had a good little sale of 120 cattle on Thursday 10th August with quite a few grown steers. 30-month Charolais steers made $1550 to $1680. Whiteface steers made $1460 to $1365 and Friesian steers $1000 then 2-year Charolais steers $992.

Small 1-year Jersey cross steers made $550 and 1-year bulls $530. 2-year Whiteface heifers sold for $990 to $1090. 1-year Angus/Friesian heifers made $600 to $602 then $520 to $580.

Dargaville was quite light on Thursday 10th August with a partial report which saw cows and calves make $1025 and dairy heifers $930. 2-year heifers made $1020 and weaner bulls $575.

Wellsford Sale:

Wellsford was quite a small sale on Monday 14th; prices eased back a bit except yearling heifers which stayed firm. Good 2-year steers made $1200 to $1230 (2.71c-2.73c) then $1030 to $1160 (2.72c-2.90c) down to $905 to $1305 (2.83c-3.46c). 18-month steers made $705 to $840 (3.34c-3.89c). 1-year heifers made $705 to $750 (3.15c-3.24c) then $555 to $645 (2.98c-3.70c). Weaner bulls made $830 to $1025 (2.82c-2.45c).
Sheep: A good sale on Wednesday with prime lambs selling well.

Ox sold for $1546 to $2384 (2.89c-2.98c) then $1096. Heavy prime cows made $1251 to $1276, then $1045 to $1138 (2.35c-2.71c) down to $838 to $916 (2.15c-2.33c). Prime and store lambs made $74 to $84 then $30 to $38, down to $18 to $23.

Feeder Calves: Feeder calves sold well for a full entry with the top prices $200 to $260, then $100 to $175 down to $100 to $135. Good medium calves made $140 to $160. Light calves made $80 and small calves $20 to $30.

Kauri Sale:

Kauri had a light entry of store cattle on Tuesday 15th, the market remains strong. 2-year cross bred steers sold for $990. 16-month steers sold for $780. 1-year heifers made $510. 20-month Devon cross heifers made $800. A full entry of feeder calves sold on a par with recent sales.

Kaikohe Sale:

A partial report for 131 cattle at Kaikohe on Wednesday 16th was much on a par with previous sales. Heavy steers sold for $1575 to $1710 (2.78c-2.83c) then $1645 to $1650 (2.81c-2.85c) down to $1055 to $1445 (2.79c-2.83c). 20-month steers sold for $940 to $975 (2.67c-2.81c) down to $800 to $890 (2.54c-2.83c).

1-year steers sold for $580 (4.02) to $610, 18-month bulls made $800 (2.54c), 18-month heifers sold for $830 to $890 (2.24c-2.30c). Weaner heifers made $455 to $500 (4.84c-4.88c). Medium empty cows sold for $805 (1.71c).
