Cattle values have been a bit mixed this week

How the weather has changed over the last two weeks, what with strong wind and hot days, we will soon be looking for some warm rain.

Farmers are flat out at present trying to get their paddocks rolled. As the old saying goes it is too wet to roll paddocks today and tomorrow it is too dry. Cattle values have been a bit mixed this week and that could be in part of too much mud and a shortage of grass.

Dargaville

A partial report of the Dargaville Sale saw good rising 2 year steers sell for $1020 to $1100, down to $880 and 1 year steers $810 to $870. 18 month Heifers sold for $835 down to $710 to $730. Feeder calves made $170 to $185 and 118 to $145 then $80 to $85.

Matakohe

Matakohe had a good entry of 300 cattle on Friday 13th, and the sale went well. 2 ½ year steers - Friesian and Angus Cross-Made $1580 to $1720. 2 Year Red White Face Steers made $1300, 1 year Steers Charolais/Friesian sold for $1050 to $1200 then Brindle Red White Face Steers made $800 to $950. Autumn to 1 year Cross Bred Bulls sold for $680 to $750. 2½ year Angus and Angus/Friesian Heifers made $1150 to $1250 then Red White Face 1 year Heifers Made $680 to $750.

Wellsford

Wellsford on Monday 16th had a small yarding this week after a full entry the previous week. The good quality cattle held their value. 2 Year Steers sold for $1075 to $1260 (2.84c - 3.05c) down to $815 to $900 (3.30c - 3.40c) 15 Month Steers made $700 to $780 (3.18c-3.52c). 18 Month Heifers made $1015 to $1090 (2.77c- 2.94c), and 15 Month Steers made $820 to $950 (2.95c - 3.33c) then (7.16c - 7.80c). 1year Heifers made $600 to $685 (296c-3.35c). Weaner Steers made $2.80c - 3.65c) (3.97c - 3.31c) then $560 to $516 (3.97c - 4.31c). Weaner Heifers made $470 to $480 (3.20c - 3.25c) then $224 to $295 (1.47 - 2.95c).

Kauri

Kauri on Tuesday 17 went quite well with 93 store cattle and 93 feeder calves that sold well. 2 year Cross Bred Steers sold for $1056 to $1215. Weaner Mixed Bulls sold for $540. 1 Year Cross Bred Steers made $855 for Hereford and White Face Steers $705. 1 Year Hereford and Mixed Heifers made $685 to $700 down to $575 to $685 and mixed Heifers $575 to $620. Weaner Heifers sold for $475 to $490 and $550 Mixed Heifers. Good Feeder Calves sold for$300 to $350, then $200 to $290 down to $140 to $180 and Light Calves $20 to $9.

Sheep

Prime Hoggets' sold for $110.

Regent annual bull sales

Brian Clements Matapouri Ltd sold 134 Hereford Bulls. 62 by 2 Year Hereford Bulls sold for $2870 and 72x1 Year Hereford Bulls sold for $2223 average.

Kaikohe

Kaikohe had a medium entry of 478 mixed cattle on Wednesday 18th; the market was a bit mixed like the other sales this week. Reports suggest the pastures are drying quickly. Heavy 30 Month Steers sold for $1375 to $1565 (2.44 - 1565c) then $114 to $1210 (3.08c - 3.17c) with medium steers $950 to $1115 (3.03c-3.43c). 15 Month Steers fetched $890 to $900 (3.03c - 3.57c). Heavy Bulls sold for $1060 to $1210 (3.16c - 3.17c), then $665 to $590 (3.23c - 3.37c) Rising 2 Year Heifers sold for (1020 to 1135) (2.35c - 2.59c) to $705 (2.99c - 3.50c) and Weaner Heifers $480 to $500 (3.66c - 4.32c). Extra Heavy Cows sold for $1375 to $1590 (2.22c - 2.44c). Then $1060 to $1115 (1.97c - 2.03c) then $825 to $950 (1.85c - 1.91c) and Medium Cows $645 to $740 (1.66c - 1.68c). Ex-service Bulls sold for $1325 to $1600 (2.76 - 3.09c)
