Pens full of quality calves at Mangatainoka on Tuesday August 29.
Three hundred calves went up for sale at the biggest sale of the season on Tuesday August 29 at Mangatainoka.
Given the capacity yarding, prices remained reasonably high, with the top Friesian bull calves ranging from $160-200 and the smaller Friesian bull calves between $120 and $155.
There were 164
Friesian bull calves and 136 beef crosses, with the numbers expected to reverse as more beef calves come on the market, according to PGG Wrightson's stock agent Tim Pickering.
Beef cross bulls sold well with a high range of $180 to $235 while heifers sold between $130 and $170.
The total sale of calves for August at Mangatainoka was 1100, well up on last year and surprising Tim as many farmers are rearing their beef calves for the weaner market in November.
