Man charged in relation to hunter dying from gunshot wound

A man has been charged with Careless Use of a Firearm Causing Death in relation to a hunting incident last week.

The 37-year-old man was arrested last week after a man died in Kaimai Range
on Monday, April 2.

He will appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow.

Gordon Douglas Leech, 57, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest during the opening weekend of the "roar".

Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler said Leech was hunting by himself in dense and remote bush off Wairakau Rd, about 15km south of Te Aroha on Monday morning.

Leech was out hunting alone on a day trip when he was shot by one of two men in a separate hunting party.

The men went to give Leech first aid at the scene. One of the men then called 111 from his cellphone.
