Mainland flavours on the menu at Rangiuru

Rangiuru School pupil Nayumi Sales is looking forward to seeing the chickens at Saturday's Country Fair.

A taste of Southland, a taste of Kiwi and a taste of the exotic will all be part of Saturday's Rangiuru School Country Fair.

Principal and Southlander Mike Gullick decided it would be a good idea to give North Islanders a taste of the south.

"In Southland any dairy anywhere you see cheese rolls — it's a southern delicacy," he says.

Kiwi favourites whitebait fritters and "something that fits in quite well at a country fair", goat curry will also be on the menu.

With the backing of the May family, the school will be using Marigold Cafe kitchen to produce slices to sell on the day.

"In the past we've had food vendors coming in, but we wanted to do things that were interesting and a little bit different," says Mike.

The country fair this year features an eco/sustainability theme.

"We've gone with [that] because we feel that ties in very well with what we do here at school. It's certainly something we push quite strongly with the kids at the school."

Mike says there has been a good response to requests for sponsorship and that will help with fundraising and allow the school to offer attractive lots for the silent auction, including cookery books by Annabel Langbein, passes to a range of attractions and, in line with the theme, products from Eco Planet, Earthwise and Only Good.

For families there is a scarecrow competition and for chainsaw-handy adults, a chainsaw sculpture competition.

Animals will include horses to ride as well as rabbits and chickens and there will be toys from Te Puke Toy Library and a bouncy castle.

The country fair starts at 10am and finishes at 2pm.
