Waikato dairy farmer Walt Cavendish is the representative for the Fair For Farmers campaign.

Today on The Country radio show, host Jamie Mackay catches up with Waikato dairy farmer Walt Cavendish to find out about “Fair for Farmers”, a new farmer-led campaign challenging the Government on the unfairness of imports.

Dairy, pork, beef and sheep farmers have united behind one message: “If it’s not okay to produce in New Zealand, it’s not okay to import and sell.”

On with the show:

Walt Cavendish:

The letter demands an end to the double standard that allows animal products banned from domestic production to flood the market through imports, as new data shows imported pork accounts for 63% of consumption.

Don Fraser:

With dairy farming for the 2024/25 season at record production and income export levels, a well-known rural finance commentator shares some thoughts on the multiplier effect of Fonterra’s $3.2 billion capital repayment to its farmer shareholders in the 2025/26 season.
