Land is being taken over by housing and causing a major threat to New Zealand's horticulture industry.
Chief Executive of Horticulture New Zealand Mike Chapman spoke to The Country's Jamie Mackay today about the danger of urban sprawl saying houses should not be built where the land is best used
to grow vegetables and fruit.
Chapman says 5 per cent of New Zealand is suitable for good horticultural growth and "we should be protecting those areas."
Jamie and Mike discuss these areas along with how we need a "buffer between urban and rural," and finally, is climate change going to make Southland the market garden for New Zealand?
