Herd of dairy cows Supplied to the NZ Herald by Dairy NZ

Two more properties have been infected with cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis, bringing the total to 23 farms. The latest properties are in Southland and South Canterbury.

Although the number of farms affected is rising, MPI's Incident Controller for M Bovis Response Dave Yard wants people to know this doesn't mean the disease is "getting away from us."

"This is more of the fact we know which farms to look at and all of these new identified properties are as a result of our forward tracing," says Yard, who encourages farmers to keep NAIT records up to date.

Yard also addresses the reports the Van Leeuwen farms may not be the source of the original contamination.

Also in today's interview - Dave Yard talks about the nationwide milk testing currently taking place, and the difficulties of testing the beef industry compared with the dairy industry.
