The Country: Graeme Muller - The chief executive of the NZ Technology Industry Association warns of a major threat to the dairy industry - animal-free proteins and the 3D printing of synthetic milk, which is claimed to be more nutritious and sustainable than the real thing!

A product being worked on in Silicon Valley could present a major threat to the dairy industry - if New Zealand technology can't keep up.

A company there has worked out how to 3D print key proteins in order to make synthetic milk, which it says is more nutritious and sustainable than the real thing.

The chief executive of the NZ Technology Industry Association, Graeme Muller said the company expects to commercialise the product next year.

He told The Country's Jamie Mackay that synthetic milk (along with animal-free proteins) pose a threat to our top export product - and we need to catch up.

Have a listen to the full interview in the audio clip above.
