The Country: We catch up with New Zealand’s Special Trade Envoy in Egypt, following on from his trip to Algeria, surprisingly our third largest dairy market.

On The Country today Jamie Mackay caught up with Mike Petersen, New Zealand's Special Trade Envoy.

Petersen is in Egypt after a trip to Algeria which is, surprisingly, our third largest dairy market.

Algeria produces little by way of dairy products and prefers to import from New Zealand instead of Europe which is much closer. Mike says this is an impressive testament to Fonterra and the quality of New Zealand dairy products.

Petersen likens Algeria to the Canterbury Plains, an exact contrast to the arid desert landscape of Egypt.

He gives Jamie Mackay an insight into Egypt, which is also potentially a big market for New Zealand dairy.
