IrrigationNZ Chair Nicky Hyslop spoke to The Country to dispel a few myths about Labour's proposed water tax and also to raise concerns.

Despite critics worrying that consumers will have to pay more to eat, Hyslop says the tax will have very little effect on the price of food.

What concerns IrrigationNZ is Labour's assertion the money will go towards cleaning up waterways that are under pressure.

"I just don't think it's going to do that, because you're targeting such a small group of farming families."

Another worry for IrrigationNZ is that the cost of compliance and monitoring may exceed the money the tax brings in.
