Dairy product prices fell again at the latest Global Dairy Trade auction, led by unexpected slides in whole milk powder and butter.

The GDT price index slipped 0.7 per cent with whole milk powder dropping 2.2 per cent to US$2821 a tonne.

Fonterra's Head of Farm Source for Otago and Southland, Mark Robinson spoke to The Country's Jamie Mackay about the result saying although it's not a significant decrease, it is the sixth drop out of the last seven GDT auctions.

"That is a bit disappointing and now the index has dropped to its lowest point since October 2016," says Robinson.

One noticeable change since the last auction is volume and Robinson reports an increase to almost 38,000 tonnes up from just over 31,000 tonnes at the previous auction.

"So that does represent more volume going on in terms of peak milk production."
