Are the days of the dual-purpose sheep gone? That's the question The Country host Jamie Mackay put to South Canterbury sheep breeder Ike Williams on today's show.
With the wool industry's recent woes Mackay is pondering whether sheep will just be bred for meat in the future. Williams says it's
too early to say but he's not sure what will save wool if the industry can't find another product such as carpet.
All is not lost for the sheep industry however as lamb finished the season positively. Williams says this is obviously a good thing but as a dual-purpose breeder "you do need wool to keep things going."
