Calving is a particularly busy time for a farm team and having everyone on the same page supports good farm routines and ultimately means calves get a good start to life.

Animal care team manager Helen Thoday caught up with The Country Early Edition's Rowena Duncum for a chat about DairyNZ's CalvingSmart events.

Thoday says the CalvingSmart workshops aim to not only educate people with the practical side of calving, but also to help keep team morale up.

"That's what we're really proud of," says Thoday, "it's a team event, everyone can come along together because we know one of the success factors for a good calving is to have a plan and work together as a team."

There are workshops for new farmers along with those who are more experienced says Thoday.

"We're just looking at it from the calf's point of view and whether everything you're doing on farm is matching those needs of the calf."
