Land and friends’ fundraising trek ends in Gisborne today

Sophie Land from Whāngārā and the friends who have accompanied her arrive back in Gisborne today after walking and jogging 475 kilometres around East Cape this past week in support of the Rural Support Trust.

Whāngārā farmer, wife and mum Sophie Land and friends arrive back in Gisborne today at the completion of their trek around East Cape supporting Rural Support Trust Tairawhiti.

The team set off from Gisborne last Saturday and have walked and jogged the 475 kilometres around the cape.

They traversed the old Motu Road on Thursday, before heading down Whakarau Road yesterday, and then on to Gisborne.

The East-Coast-Loop-in-Boots campaign is raising funds through Givealittle.

“Rural Support Trust Tairawhiti has helped so many people in our communities,” Land said.

“We wanted to raise some money for them and give back to them for the amazing support they provide for people all over Tairāwhiti.”

As of yesterday afternoon, the Givealittle page had raised more than $11,400.

“One of the trust’s initiatives is to send individuals down to Outward Bound and we would love to ensure this once-in-a-lifetime experience and opportunity is available for others in the future.”

Land spent time at Outward Bound earlier this year and that’s where her fundraiser idea for the trust was born.

The “trekkers” are due to arrive in Gisborne at the Town Clock late this afternoon.
