Maori farmers and horticulturists will meet at Massey University on Wednesday to discuss how they can make the most of present trends towards production of certified organic fruit and vegetables.
Talks will include the potential for certification of produce to a Maori standard of organic agriculture, so that it could
have its own brand or trademark. They will also talk about the potential for land with multiple owners to be used for organic produce, and for such growers to reduce their risks and costs by working through co-operatives.
The hui, hosted by the Poutama Trust and the university, will include presentations by Trade NZ, Heinz Wattie, Turners and Growers and Professor Richard Buchanan, of Massey's marketing department.
The 25 places available at the hui have been filled by representatives from Northland, the Bay of Plenty, the East Coast, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Blenheim and Te Kuiti.
