Hail takes toll on fruit

Hail damaged the apple crop last week, reducing export earnings for orchardists by $3.4 million, said Pipfruit New Zealand chairman Ian Palmer.

He said the equivalent of 200,000 cartons of apples were damaged in the Tasman district and orchardists would decide early next month how much of the fruit could be salvaged.
